Newton of Logierait is home to the Robertson family. John, his sister Margaret and John's son, Craig work on the farm at home and also rent Balnamuir and Milton of Kincraigie, both of which are on Kinnaird Estate. In total, their ground covers over 1100 acres and is split between low lying ground and hill ground, either side of the River Tay.
The farm is home to over 150 cows, which are mainly 3/4 Limousin x British Blues which run along side a small herd of pedigree Limousins. Our main focus is on producing top quality show calves, however we also hope to build on the Logierait pedigree Limousin herd in the future. Our show calves are usually sold at either the Aberdeen Spring Show or at the Caledonian Marts Show and sale in September. Many of these calves are shown at both Summer and Christmas Shows with their new owners. The remainder of our calves are sold at 12 months old through the store ring at United Auctions, Stirling. Any bulls bred in the herd are usually for sale privately - please see our FOR SALE page for further information.
Over the years the Robertsons have bred many calves which have been successful in the show ring, to name a few:
-
Lip Gloss, who stood Champion at the 2002 Royal Smithfield Show
-
Dai, Scottish National Winter Fair Suckled Calf Champion 2006
-
Black Magic, Champion of the Scottish Winter Fair in 1998
-
John's Boy, Winter Fair Champion 1994
-
Unique, Reserve Champion at Scottish Winter Fair 1997, Champion Royal Highland Show 1998
-
Va Va Voom, top price homebred calf sold to date - £4,800 at 12 months old
The previous stock bull on the farm was Cowtham Justice (sired by Djerk) who was bought in 1995 at Perth Bull Sales for £2000 - which proved to be a very good investment! With his first calf covering the cost of the bull himself and his calves have now been sold for up to £6,500 (Tudor Edwards, Wales). Unfortunately we lost him in 2005 however we still have a supply of his semen and many of his daughters have been retained in the herd.
Sheep are also kept on the farm with ewe numbers currently numbering 700. This comprises 200 Blackies, 200 Mules and 300 Texels. The resulting lambs are sold fat through Highland Glen, with 150 ewe lambs kept as replacements.
Highland Ponies are also bred on the farm as a sideline. Our aim is to breed ponies which can be successfull shown both in hand and ridden, unfortunately, due to lack of time the majority of our Highlands have not been shown to date. We usually have various ages of ponies for sale, please see the FOR SALE section of our website.
We hope you enjoy our website (which is still very much under construction!) and please feel free to contact us with any queries.
